Weekend Shorts 06/28/01 - 06/30/01
I’m back. Yes, I know - you’re thrilled. Well, it was unavoidable….the drone of daily life was interrupted
by what one can only call the hell of professional conferences (and even a brief stint at some rather
impressive self-actualization classes, once deemed occultish - but I’ve since changed my mind). So
aside from being completely enthralled in the new Bridget Jones’ saga, I have once again returned to
my normal schedule of going out, getting drunk, and bringing the details to all of you, my loyal readers
(yuk, yuk, yuk…….stop me now, PLEASE).
Ok…….Just a brief update.
I have nearly completed my write up of the Flickerstick, Project 67, Breaking Benjamin show complete
with Flickerstick and Project 67 CD Reviews. For all of you living underneath your blankets……Flickerstick is one of
the two (originally 4) bands vying for the ultimate prize on VH1’s Bands on the Run. Just a precursor…..it was a
great show, despite the fact that it was on a “school” night and TOO far away. And NO….they
can’t tell us who won…..so don’t ask.
Speaking of VH1…..You can catch one of the area’s hottest live cover bands, UUU,
on the series Cover Wars this Saturday, July 7 at 9 PM. I’ve caught a few episodes and am
VERY interested to see how those boys handle the infamous Paul Schaffer (of David Letterman fame).
Check out their website,
www.uuu.org. for any changes and for
upcoming show dates for the band.
AND
Speaking of UUU….caught their show Thursday night at Wanda’s Deck and Beach Club with
Negative Space. Talk about a totally out of control show. Negative Space opened for UUU
with all the energy and funk that Negative Space fans have come to expect. They played some
of their original music including the Whore song (I know, I know, I promised the guys I’d get the
CD the next time I’m out) and a few others, along with some of their classic covers…..love what you guys
do with the Steve Miller Band and Jesse’s Girl. Here’s to hoping Moses didn’t scare
you off too much! Don’t worry. He’s harmless.
After a short break, UUU took the stage with their usual dose of unstoppable energy. I’m not
clear how we all paid attention what with the Best Butts contest right around the corner and all….Jen Shade
and 105.7 the X were there to add yet another touch of class to Wanda’s already flailing reputation as
MEAT MARKET (that was my pathetic attempt at sarcasm). OOOOOoooooo Sign ME UP!!! Please!!???!!!?…….Yeah,
RIGHT. (Butt grinding scene DELETED)
Anywho…….the show went well, the crowd was great and I got to meet
some long-time UUU fans…..props to Amanda and Buffy (YES, for the millionth time….as in
Buffy the Vampire Slayer). You girls are true UUU fans.
Begin Nevermoure portion of the weekend.
Yup. Saw these guys twice this weekend. They opened for Emily’s Toybox at Shakey’s on
Friday. It was great, as usual. I’ve said it once, and I’m gonna keep on saying it…….you guys are
going to kick your own asses if you don’t get out and hear these guys. They are on their way to the top. Enough Preaching.
OH MY GOD!!!
Emily’s Toybox. I’ve been listening to people rant and rave about this band forever………and now I
finally know why. Not only do these three seemingly innocent and shy looking guys put on one
of the most power-packed show’s I’ve ever seen, they are also fuckin hysterical. Again, I apologize for
not knowing enough (with my undying promise to learn as much as I can as quickly as I can…and,
of course, pass it on to my loyal readers) but seriously…my cheeks hurt for the rest of the weekend
after laughing my ass off at ETB’s lead, Mike. Apparently, I got to see a great show for these guys a
s it was there lead guitarist’s second last gig. I’m sure his replacement will do great, but it was nice to
see the group, in its entirety before one of the peas left the pod. Check out Emily’s
ToyBox at
www.emilystoybox.com
I’ll see you at a gig soon!
Saturday. McFly’s, Nevermoure. Need I say more? Anway. The place was slow, but the
gig was great. The guys showcased a bunch of new songs and dare I say it…..?? but I think I
like them even better than some of the old stuff……NAH! Impossible. I’ll let
you decide. Oh, that is if Shawn ever gets off his ass and gets me the titles so
that I can bring them to you (- OPEN CAN OF WORMS HERE….just kidding,, Shawn, we
KNOW you’re the hardest working member, right?) Anyway. The Nevermoure web site is
FINALLY UP, so check them out at www.nevermoure.com . There schedule is up, so
get out and see them. NO EXCUSES.
This week, provided no disasters occur….I’ll be at
Wanda’s Deck and Beach Club: Thurs, July 5 JulianFist www.julianfist.com
I have no idea where I’ll be Friday or Saturday……………anyone have any suggestions. You know me, I’m open.
Thanks to all of you who read my ramblings and have taken the time to praise them (I can’t imagine the
motivation behind that one) and who stop me and say hi. I love hearing from you guys. We’re
back on schedule now…it’s all good.
