Weekend Shorts: Intro; 4/27/01 - Gullifty's - Miss Fortune, Julian Fist
Weekend Shorts:
It’s not so creative; maybe you can help me come up with a better title, but for now it will remain.
This will officially be known as the spot that sums up my weekends out and about. You’ll be able
to find lots of stuff here, most of which will consist of my opinion (which I KNOW you’re all anxiously
awaiting). You’ll find reviews of shows that I’ve seen, cool clubs/bars to check out, upcoming events that
you shouldn’t miss (and of course, why shouldn’t miss them). It’s just a spot that consists of little tid-bits
of information about things that I’ve done and seen throughout the week, that at least vaguely pertain to
the rock and roll scene. A short footnote: Nothing that I say is intended to pigeonhole anyone, and I
apologize a head of time if the terminology that I use does that. I have my opinions and my history as
a music fan is probably (most likely) different than yours. Rest assured, however, that I like ALL kinds
of music and my appreciation for the people who create it runs deep. Please take what you read here
with a grain of salt and a healthy dose of humor and understanding.
We’re gonna go WAY back since I’ve just recently gotten motivated.

Guilifty’s with Miss Fortune (Boston, MA) and Julian Fist.
This was a first for me. I had never been to Gulifty’s and wasn’t sure what I was in for.
But I gotta say, I really like the place. It’s a cool place to see bands. It’s one of the few places that
I’ve been to in Harrisburg that feels like a big city club, kind of like a place you’d find in Philly,
NYC or Boston.
Miss Fortune, hailing from Boston, MA opened for Julian Fist. The last time Miss Fortune
played in the area was for the Millennium Music Fest. I know why they asked them back.
They were great. I mean, really great. Great enough that I bought a CD, which is something I
avoid at all costs, mostly because I’m broke all the time. The 10-song set was comprised of
original songs, mostly from the CD. Songs like Antenna, Prima Donna, Swim, and If You
Died reveal the great musical talent of the band as well as showcase the amazing vocal
stylings of the bands front man, Ryan Link. I spoke with Jay Bucklay (guitars) about the
bands’ musical influences and was a little surprised (although guitar players live in a world
of their own). The punk and heavy rock bands mentioned don’t necessarily reflect the
collective sound of the band. They have a very Matchbox 20/Radiohead feel. If you
get the chance to check them out, I highly recommend it. You can buy their CD,
Miss Fortune at www.cdbaby.com
and you can check out the band online at www.missf.com.
Julian Fist. Very entertaining. There shows are a lot of fun and they do some great covers.
I haven’t had the opportunity to listen to any of their originals with any depth yet, but when I do,
I’ll be sure to get a better write up for them.
