I saw Nevermoure a few weeks ago at Revolution Club and was blown away.
So blown away, in fact, that I JUST HAD to see a full show. So I drove…and drove…and drove (long story).
Let me tell you, it was worth every mile, and then some. The show consisted of three sets of the
band’s original tunes with a few great covers thrown in and a stage show that is not only crazy
and unpredictable, but also displays the guy’s genuine love of performing. I got the CD from the
boys last week, and it is every bit as amazing as I thought it would be. Product of Modern Need
takes its listeners on a journey of catchy “pop” ditty’s winding their way around hard rock tunes
and every so often yielding to a few somber, soulful tracks. Songs like Sweet Christine and Forever
Yours get stuck in your head and beg for another listen. This is not the last time you’ll be hearing
from this band. They are already getting label attention. So, do what you need to do to get out and
see them before you’re kicking your own ass for not taking advantage of the fact that they are still a “local” band.
Nevermoure’s Ritchy, Adam, Big Dawg and Shawn began playing together a year ago. These four
boys from Altoona have quickly garnered a huge following all over Pennsylvania. They released their
CD earlier this month and have been touring to promote it. I got a chance to sit down with them at the
Crowbar and ask them a few questions.
In talking with Nevermoure, the one thing I noticed is that the guys, while serious about their music,
don’t take themselves too seriously. And I figured out why that is: they KNOW that they’re good and
I don’t think it has ever occurred to any of them to stop doing what they are doing until everyone
else knows it as well. Another truth evident in conversation with them is that they love their music
and it is a huge part of who they are. Front man, Adam Marino, told me that one of his biggest influences is
Garth Brooks. It seemed odd at the time, considering the style of music that the guys play. But, after
taking the time to sit down and listen to the CD, it became evident that Adam is not just the band’s
lead singer, but that his lyrics are the heart of Nevermoure’s collection of tales of loss and longing
for what could have been. I don’t want to mislead you, the CD is far from dark and depressing. In
fact, the marriage of Marino’s heartbreaking lyrics with his words of hope are what complete the
experience of Product of Modern Need.
If Marino’s lyrics are the heart of Nevermoure; Ritchy’s guitar riffs, Big Dawg’s bass and
Shawn’s beats are the backbone of this melody-making machine. When I say these guys rock,
I mean THEY ROCK. Musically, these guys are so in tune with each other that you’d think they’ve
been playing together for 12 years instead of 12 months. They also genuinely like playing together
and have a mutual respect for one another that makes itself apparent at each performance.
Nevermoure has been working non-stop all year and plan to take Product of Modern Need as far as it will go.
When I asked the guys about their aspirations for the band, the answer that I got was “lunch boxes and
action figures”. I laughed. But it wasn’t funny. We’re all a little dissatisfied with the complacency and
utter lack of talent that saturates today’s music. These guys have something very unique and they know
that, especially in today’s world of cookie cutter bands, that is not only the most vital and craved element
of the future of music, but I consider it to be the product of need to which their CD refers. More importantly,
this bands believes that, together, they have created something that is absolutely amazing. And they are
right. Nevermoure IS a product of modern need.
