Via Satellite

I caught Via Satellite live at the MMC and I'd have to describe them as chaotic noise punk. They were fun to watch, but, I couldn't really get into their show because I was unfamiliar with their music. So, all I could really do was stand there and take it all in.

I did manage to pick up some of their music. They were selling "The Schmegma EP," which is what they released when they were known as Death By Nostalgia and I was told that this release wasn't all that good. Not really the best way to sell an album. But, I didn't think it was all that bad. It's punk music, plain and simple...and it's not everyday you see someone selling a cassette tape. If you listen closely to the first song on side two, they rip into a little of Ozzy's "Crazy Train" before going into their own, original tune. Interesting song to say the least.

They also had a Via Satellite disc for sale and, I don't know if it was just the copy I got or what, but, it was a CD-R, which isn't a bad thing. But, it looks like something I recorded on my computer. It's got a good sound and all, but, this is not something you wanna sell to people. I could make 50 of these for under $10.00 and, for that price, you can afford to give these things out. If you wanna have something to sell at your shows, at least try to be a little more professional. Just a thought. As for the music, it's pretty much like their live show...chaotic noise punk. Raw, straight forward and in your face.

I'm not sure what kind of audience this band is trying to reach. But, I think they would do well in front of a younger audience. That whole skate park, under 21 scene. I would like to see them focus on their music a little more. Take that chaotic vibe, which is something Nirvana had to a certain degree, and fine tune it. When you're all over the place, some people may find that hard to understand. So, you tighten it up a bit and unleash that ball of energy on your audience and you've got your hook. At least that's the way I see it.

I checked out their web page and, from what I read, there's more music on the way. It'll be interesting to see what the band has up their sleeve this time around. But, for now, check out the "Not Tonight" CD and, if you wanna go back a bit farther, the Death By Nostalgia EP.
