Spotlight - Thirteen Over Eight

When I first heard Thirteen Over Eight, I was quickly drawn to the variety on their self titled release. It's kind of a disappointment that there's only six songs on here and, since it clocks in at a little under half an hour, it's somewhat of a short album. But...and you don't see this too often...you get more from this band with six songs than some bands give you with a full length release. There's a lot going on within each song. It's got heaviness, it's got some radio friendly sound, it's got some not so radio friendly sound, it's got some clean singing, some screaming, a little alternative, some hardcore. I mean, hell, what do you call this style of music? Well, the world original comes to mind first of all. I say that because, usually, the stuff that comes across my desk...even the stuff that I'm totally blown away with...had a certain sound that, for the most part, you can nail down. You can say that this band does this and that band does that...you can't say that here because to give their musical style a single label would not do them justice. In their bio, I saw them described as an "emotional rock outfit" and an "in your face, aggressive, melodic rock 'n' roll machine." Okay, I can agree with that. But, there's much more to be found here. Honestly, I think the best review here is to listen to the album yourself and form your own opinion. You're either gonna like it or you're not and I'm willing to bet that you're gonna swing to the "like it" side of the fence.
