I'm still sorting through some of the MMC stuff that I came home
with, which means there's more for me to talk about. This time
around, I'd like to mention Another Engine. Anyone catch
their show at the Gingerbread Man Downtown on the 26th?
How were they? Of course, I didn't make it, that's
why I'm asking. But, I did pick up a six song CD and,
as I sit here listening to it, I find myself wondering
about their live show. On disc, at least on the one I got,
they’ve got an alternative/pop rock flavor. It’s pretty
catchy stuff…probably has a better/heavier vibe in a live setting.
Picked up a disc from Stigma, who I heard a lot of good things about.
Not really sure how to describe 'em. The CD I have only had three
songs and it’s running time is roughly thirteen minutes. But,
a lot came to mind when I was listening to this. At times,
they’ve got a slow heaviness to their sound, there’s an
electronic element as well, maybe a little goth. They've got
something different going on and I think they're gonna be
able to take it to the next level. Keep an eye on 'em.
The Mocean8 CD that I picked up was, well, a simple description would be
to call it acoustic rock. Not sure if any of you remember a
Pennsylvania band called The New Messiahs, they had a free
cassette tape they were handing out quite a few years ago.
Anyway, that's who this band reminded me of. Not a bad
release, but, the production could've been touched up a bit.
Nice little package though...should appeal to those of you
who are into the whole singer/songwriter scene.
The McGuffin CD, "Like You, I Once Was," was interesting.
Their music seems to have a lot of old school influences
such as Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, yet,
they sound nothing like those bands. Kind of hard to
imagine, huh? Not sure what kind of sound they're going
for here, but, if I were to take a stab at it, I'd say
they're trying to blend a 70's sound with a more modern
style...know what I mean? I hope you do because I'm not
really sure how else to explain it. While I didn't read
it, there's an article on their website with the headline
"band of many genres." From what I heard on this disc,
yeah, I would agree with that. Since I can't really think
of anyone who has anything close to their sound, I'd have
to say that what they're doing is fresh. It's not a sound
that suffers because of over exposure...kind of like when
every band on the radio sounded like a Pearl Jam clone.
When you look at it that way, it's a good thing.
I'd suggest checkin' them out.
One band that I have to comment on is Lucid Fly.
This was their second year at the MMC and,
sad to say, I didn't get to see them perform.
I did, however, have the chance to talk with them
and they were pretty cool. I should've had the
tape player going because our conversaion came
out more like an interview. Oh, well, I don't
think straight when I have beer in my system.
Anyway...I do have some of their music. In fact,
I've had it long before the MMC. So, I've been
crankin' on the tunes of Lucid Fly for quite some
time now and I've been diggin' it. Their sound
might be simple to describe...heavy rock with
a female vocalist...but, they've got so much
to offer and I'm really lookin' forward to
hearing their full length release. Once they
get that out, that's when you're gonna see
this band rise to the top. Remember the name
Lucid Fly because you will be hearing it a lot
more in the future. I guarantee it.
Well, I guess that should do it for now. Between
this article, the previous one and all the other
ones I've done, this should give you enough to check
out while I pen some new stuff. New reviews, new people.
Don't worry...I'll always have something for you.
Anyway, enjoy...and be sure to check some of this stuff out.
Support local music....and not so local music as well. It's all good!
