Mary Prankster

MARY PRANKSTER

Ah, Mary Prankster...in a word, she's 'da bomb, plain and simple. Her debut release, "Blue Skies Over Dundalk," is a punk rock classic...or, as I believe it was described, "cowpunk." Uh, whatever. How to describe this album? Let's see, it's charming, it's enjoyable, it's the feeling of youth, it's upbeat, it's a short burst of foot stompin' energy and it's shocking...we can't forget shocking. It's a ten song release that has a running time of nineteen minutes. Doesn't seem like a whole hell of a lot of music, does it? One thing's for sure, even if you only listen to this release one time in your entire life, you will never...and I mean NEVER...forget it. I mean, let's be real here, she had somewhat of a radio hit with a song called "Tits & Whiskey" and "Mercyfuck," which is one of the most brilliant tunes ever written, is pure genuis. This release is the Holy Grail of independent music. Seek and ye shall find, sayeth I.

Next up was "Roulette Girl," another ten song release with a longer running time...twenty five minutes. Since you can shock the hell out of people, I mean REALLY shock 'em, one time, some may feel this album lacks the bite of her debut. Maybe they're right. But, to do so again would really be, shall we say, pointless? So, this release is a more mature version of the Mary Prankster sound. There's a lot of variety on this album, which is really good when you go to sink your teeth into this material. It does have the same charm as the debut, which I believe comes not from the music itself. But, from Mary Prankster's personality and the way she presents each song. She does seem like a very charming person though. When I did an over the phone interview with her...on Easter Sunday no less...she was totally sweet and very down to earth. She's the kind of woman you would walk to the end of the earth for. If I ever win the lottery, I'll fund her musical career until she's 95. No kidding. You wanna hear a lyrical genius at work? Spin the third track on this release, "The World Is Full Of Bastards," and you'll understand what I mean. "Punk Rock Heaven" is priceless. I would say those two songs are my favorites. But, the whole album's pretty much a slam dunk. You can't go wrong with this one, especially if you own the one that came before it.

Two down, one to go. Another ten song release, a running time of 31 minutes and, is it just me, or is there some sort of pattern going on here? Anyway, "Tell Your Friends" is the name of this one and, you know, it's just a good record. She charmed us, she shocked us, she did this, she did that. We all know how great she is, so, she's really under no pressure. We know she's the greatest thing since sliced white bread. So, I think her only goal with this album was to entertain us...and entertain she does. It's hard to pick a stand out track on this one because they all go together so well and I enjoyed this one from start to finish. It's called "Tell Your Friends" and that's exactly what you need to do because a world without Mary Prankster would really, really suck.
