Spotlight - Debtor's Mill
I saw Debtor's Mill open for Halestorm at the Midtown Tavern in Harrisburg
way back when...it's been quite some time, that's for sure. I was handed a
copy of their "December's Child" CD, which I'll get into in a moment. As
for the performance, which was done as a duo, I was impressed. They did
some pretty cool songs and, if I remember correctly, the one that really
stood out was their Fuel cover.
Anyway, I forget where I saw this mentioned, but, I saw Debtor's Mill
described as folk rock. I can't honestly say that I agree with that
statement because, after listening to this disc, I heard a bit more. Even
when I saw them perform as an acoustic duo, folk rock didn't come to mind.
I mean, get real here, they were opening for Halestorm when they were going
full swing with the "rock show" thing and that sure as hell isn't folk.
Okay, I'm getting off the subject here. The disc, ah yes, reminds me a bit
of The New Messiahs. Don't know if any of you remember that group. They had
a pretty cool tape out some time ago which they gave away for free. That's
who came to mind when I heard this disc. But, Debtor's Mill has a bit more
heaviness to them. Listen to "Hey You" and tell me if Led Zepplin doesn't
pop into your mind. True, some of the songs on this album are a bit
mellow. But, there's some good guitar work to be found on here and the
songs are well written and, once you hear 'em, they leave their mark on you.
I should have written about this album long ago, but, when you're one
person trying to keep in touch with the rest of the world (which is exactly
what I do) sometimes, a disc or two falls through the cracks. If you're
into good, well written music, don't let this one fall through the cracks.
It's a very cool release that's worth picking up.
