Chameleon Club, Lancaster, PA - 12/27/00 - Live Alien Broadcast, Mary Prankster, Martini Bros.
Wednesday, December 27
Live Alien Broadcast
kicked off the night at 9 pm at the Chameleon Club. It
was our first time seeing them, so we were unfamiliar with their songs. They
were in matching white outfits and Shannon got a flashback of the Beastie
Boys. They were entertaining (the drummer's comical facial expressions kept
us amused) and they sounded good.
Now, we usually we feel really out of place because there are drunken older
people all around us, but now there were younger, less drunken ones around
us. Shannon had felt a little out of place until she saw someone walk by
with a long blue wig on. Phew.
Mary Prankster took the stage at
10 with her glittery red cowboy hat and her
guitar. She had more fans in the crowd. This was our first time seeing
Mary. Her favorite topics for songs were alcohol and sex, which was fine for
the crowd assembled there. A resounding cheer would go up as she introduced
each new song. She was entertaining and Mary and her band put on a grand show.
Ha, we were sort of um... uncomfortable with the annoying, twenty-something
drunk guy that was all around us. He pushed by Shannon and started snapping
his fingers, asking Melanie to dance. She gave him the
get-away-you-drunk-crazy-man look and Shannon felt like she was in a bad A
Night at the Roxbury skit. He asked Shannon with his oh-so-lovely beer
breath what color her sweater was. May we quote, "ORANGE OR RED!?!!!"
Shannon asked him what he said again because she didn't think someone would
ask something so stupid, but obviously it was possible. Shannon gave him an
"ewwwwww get away from me" look and he backed up for a bit. By the way, her
sweater was orange. He had been throwing his hands above our heads and
bopping all around like a complete psycho and Shannon sort of pushed her way
up a bit more towards Melanie and the other sane people. The guy next to
Melanie, and also another nice gal cleared a wee path for us and let us in
front of them. They said we had to experience Mary Prankster closer up if it
was our first time. We thanked them and we were definitely happy to be away
from the spastic drunken lad.
After Mary's set, The Martini Bros. finally made their appearance at 11. We
were in the front row and very jolly. Shannon hoped that not too many people
saw her doing her wee jigs around in her little area. Oh well, everyone else
seemed busy dancing too. We know that Shannon's dad was more towards the
back, by himself, probably watching us be all crazy.
Early on into the set, Mary was invited up to share a mic with Mike and join
in on "Nightmare (Party on Wheels)." She grooved on stage with Mike and
Deuce and even laid her hat on Deuce's head. **we hope we got some good
shots of that**
Anyway, Deuce and Mike were right up front on the stage so it was a little
odd to have them right there, but it was definitely cool to see them playing
so close. Mike's cigarette butts even fell on Shannon's camera case - eep!
Rej was playing drums as great as usual and they were all having a jolly
good time. They played quite a bit of older songs from Portable, some from
Transmission, and a few covers. We missed out on their Christmas song, "Santa
Claus is Back in Town" because Mike didn't know the bass part. (Check out their site for the MP3.)
Oh well. We left at midnight which was right after
they finished. And if Melanie was paying attention, she would have gotten a
set list. We had an awesome time there that night and we can't wait to see
them again.
